Intense conflict in Gaza has meant the world has turned against Israel

Over the last six months, the Israeli war against Hamas has escalated significantly. In May 2021, violence erupted between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters in East Jerusalem, leading to a series of rocket attacks from Hamas militants based in the Gaza Strip. This led to an 11-day conflict in which Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Gaza, while Hamas fired thousands of rockets into Israeli territory.

The conflict resulted in significant casualties on both sides, as well as widespread destruction in Gaza. The international community called for a ceasefire, which was eventually brokered by Egypt in May 2021.

Since then, tensions between Israel and Hamas have remained high, with sporadic outbreaks of violence continuing. There have been several incidents of rockets being fired into Israel from Gaza, prompting Israeli airstrikes in response. In addition, there have been clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters in East Jerusalem and in other parts of the West Bank.

Overall, the conflict has shown no signs of abating, and the situation remains volatile and unpredictable. Efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians continue to face significant challenges.

Following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the Israeli war against Hamas escalated significantly. The Israeli military launched a series of airstrikes targeting Hamas military infrastructure, command centres, and rocket launch sites in the Gaza Strip. In addition to airstrikes, Israeli ground forces also conducted incursions into Gaza to locate and destroy Hamas tunnels and weapons caches. But to attack those tunnels and so-called Hamas hideouts, they did not care who was shot dead on the way to do so. Thus, a lot of ordinary civilians died under the Israeli army’s destructiveness.

The Israeli government also implemented a blockade on Gaza, restricting the flow of goods and people in and out of the territory, in an effort to weaken Hamas and prevent the smuggling of weapons. This blockade led to widespread humanitarian suffering in Gaza, with shortages of essential goods and services.

The conflict also saw an increase in rocket attacks by Hamas against Israeli cities and towns, prompting Israel to increase its missile defence systems and conduct retaliatory strikes against Hamas targets.

Overall, the Israeli war against Hamas in the aftermath of the October 7 attack was characterised by intense military operations, a blockade of Gaza, and a cycle of violence that resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The conflict continued for several weeks before a very short ceasefire was eventually reached with the mediation of international actors.

The intense conflict in Gaza has led to a growing international condemnation of Israel’s actions. Many countries and world leaders have criticised Israel for its disproportionate use of force, civilian casualties, and violations of international law.

In recent months, the world could see Israel committing one war crime after another. Hospitals and health workers were attacked just like that. Even though cars were clearly marked with the logos of international aid organisations, they were taken under fire and international staff killed.

The Israeli government may say it is doing all it can to eradicate Hamas, but that does not justify the genocide it does seem to be carrying out. No wonder that the widespread civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza have also fuelled global outrage against Israel.

Additionally, the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem has further strained Israel’s relations with the international community. It is an intolerable thing for the government to stand by quietly as far-right Israelis attack Palestinians and even chase them out of their homes only to take them in themselves.

As a result, many countries have called for an immediate ceasefire and a long-term political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Only after the US threatened to stop transferring military equipment to Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu seemed to get more frightened of losing his best ally. Biden himself also, is under pressure to act tough on Israel. And so Israel finds herself completely isolated in the world. Among the nations Israel finds no ease – no rest….

In Israel the position of Netanyahu is not so good any more. There are several factors contributing to the waning popularity of Netanyahu.

Firstly, Netanyahu has been facing corruption charges, which have tarnished his image and leadership. This has eroded public trust in him and his government.

Secondly, Netanyahu has faced criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel. Many have accused him of mishandling the crisis, leading to high infection rates and a struggling economy.

Additionally, Netanyahu’s controversial policies, such as annexation of parts of the West Bank, have alienated some of his traditional supporters, both domestically and internationally.

Lastly, Netanyahu’s long tenure as Prime Minister (since 2009) has led to fatigue among voters, with many seeking new leadership and change. These factors combined have contributed to the waning popularity of Netanyahu and his government.

As things rumble on at home, discontent is also growing in Western countries about how the Israeli leader went to maintain his position of power, using Palestinians as scapegoats for his country’s internal problems.
What also bothers many people now in his country is that he is really not doing much to get the hostages released. On the contrary, the frequent attacks by the Israeli army in Gaza are rather more opportunities to get those prisoners dead as well.

We read in the Bible:

And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:  And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: (Deuteronomy 28:65-66)
